Joe Cole learns the art of Muay Thai boxing in the first ‘A Prayer Before Dawn’ trailer

A24 released the first trailer for director Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire’s prison-set boxing drama A Prayer Before Dawn on Monday. The film, which was shot in an actual Thai prison with actual inmates, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May earlier this year, where it received rave reviews from critics.

Based on Billy Moore’s best-selling memoir of the same name, A Prayer Before Dawn tells the true story of a troubled young British boxer sent to one of Thailand’s most notorious jails. Refusing to die inside prison, he becomes a student of the lethal art of Muay Thai boxing, and in the process, finds a brotherhood that will guide him on an incredible journey to redemption.

“The fact that it was a true story, the authenticity, Thailand, boxing, the prison world and above all, Billy Moore’s character, fascinating in his contradictions, in his inner conflicts, his addiction and in all his complexity,” Sauvaire said when asked what drew him to direct A Prayer Before Dawn. “It was Rita Dagher who first spoke to me about this project and offered me the screenplay that she was producing with Hurricane Films. I then read the book, which is Billy’s story, from his childhood to his release from prison. After that, I met Billy in Liverpool and was instantly drawn to him. He is extremely sensitive despite the extreme violence that seems to inhabit him.”

A Prayer Before Dawn stars Joe Cole, Vithaya Pansringarm, Panya Yimmumphai, Nicolas Shake, and Pornchanok Mabklang, and will open in theaters in 2018.

“I can give you the right books, teach you the right spells, but that last one percent, that’s up to you,” Black’s character tells Lewis, revealing that he is indeed a warlock himself and is willing to teach his nephew the ways of magic.

However, when Lewis’ uncle reveals that the home they reside in used to be owned by a very wicked and powerful warlock named Isaac Izard (MacLachlan), it is up to Lewis, his uncle, and Mrs. Zimmerman (Blanchett), the next-door witch, to destroy the clock once and for all before it does something horrible.
