Alec Baldwin spoofs Donald Trump’s embarrassing Phoenix rally on ‘Weekend Update: Summer Edition’

This is just too great.

Alec Baldwin reprised his role as Donald Trump on Thursday evening for the cold open of Weekend Update: Summer Edition hosted by co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che to poke fun at the president’s rather disturbing rally in Phoenix earlier this week and the result was, well, pretty remarkable.

“How about that eclipse, folks, huh?” Baldwin’s version of Trump said while sporting a pair of dark shades. “A lot of people don’t know this, but you can damage your eyes while looking at an eclipse. No predicted this. They couldn’t have! I figured it out all by myself.”

One of the biggest highlights of last night’s cold open was Saturday Night Live cast member Kenan Thompson, who played “Michael the Black Man,” the guy who appeared behind Trump on Tuesday wearing a “TRUMP & Republicans Are Not Racist” t-shirt and waving a “BLACKS FOR TRUMP” sign.

“That’s what the ad said you was looking for,” Thompson said when asked by Trump if he really was a black person, a joke obviously inspired by the “phantom Craigslist ad” that was looking to hire actors to pose as Trump supporters at the Phoenix rally.

Weekend Update also announced last night that season 43 of SNL will premiere on September 30 with host Ryan Gosling, who stars alongside Harrison Ford in Denis Villeneuve’s long-awaited Blade Runner 2049, and musical guest Jay-Z.
