The gorgeous new trailer for Pixar’s Coco was released this morning and does an outstanding job of further introducing us to this animated love letter to Mexico where an aspiring musician goes on an extraordinary journey through the Land of the Dead in search of the person he looks up to the most.
Miguel is a boy who, despite his family’s generations-old ban on music, does nothing but dream about becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. In a desperate attempt to prove his talent, he accidentally ventures into the Land of the Dead. However, in order to leave the newly discovered world, he may need to give up his love for music forever.
Lee Unkrich, perhaps best known for his work on Toy Story 3, directed Coco with the assistance of co-director Adrian Molina, who served as a story artist on Monsters University, so we know this film is in nothing but the best of hands. Gorgeous visuals, a touching story, and plenty of laughs are sure to make Pixar’s latest release one to remember, especially with a cast that includes the likes of Gael García Bernal and Benjamin Bratt.
While there seem to be a number of striking similarities to The Book of Life, another animated film which bore similar themes to those of Coco, we can’t help but think Unkrich and Molina have something much more special tucked up their sleeves with this one. I suppose we’ll find out when Coco opens in theaters on November 22, 2017.
