With the August release of the Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw just around the corner, Universal Pictures announced today that they have signed a first-look production deal with director David Leitch and his wife/producing partner Kelly McCormick.
The studio reportedly began negotiating the deal with Leitch and McCormick after the production shoot on Hobbs & Shaw, which the couple is producing under their newly established 87North Production banner, went without hassle, despite it being the largest, most expensive project of Leitch’s career to date, according to Variety.
“David and Kelly have established themselves as a distinctive, stylish filmmaking team who can do it all, from contained thrillers to franchise tentpoles,” said Universal president Peter Cramer. “We are confident that this summer’s Hobbs & Shaw will build on their impressive track record of bringing bold, high-quality entertainment to giant global audiences, and we are excited to formalize our long-standing relationship with them at Universal.”
After Hobbs & Shaw, the couple is set to produce a number of other projects, including the action thriller Nobody, which Universal recently acquired the rights to from STX Films, and Friday Black, an adaptation of the New York Times best-selling debut from Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah.
“Donna, Peter and the amazing team at Universal have been such great partners to work with on Atomic Blonde and now Hobbs & Shaw,” McCormick and Leitch said in a joint statement. “Through our new company 87North Productions, we are thrilled to be extending this special working relationship to continue to make movies that we are passionate about in any genre.”
Leitch’s past directorial efforts include John Wick, which he co-directed along with Chad Stahelski, as well as Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2.
Hobbs & Shaw is due out in theaters on August 2.

Paramount taps ‘Fargo’ creator Noah Hawley to write, direct next installment in ‘Star Trek’ series
Fresh off the release of his feature directorial debut Lucy in the Sky last month, Noah Hawley has been set to write and direct the upcoming next installment in the Star Trek franchise, according to Deadline.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, and the rest of the principal cast are all expected to return for Star Trek 4, which Hawley will also produce for his 26 Keys banner along with JJ Abrams and Bad Robot.
The film is not in any way related to the R-rated spinoff Abrams and Quentin Tarantino have been developing with writer Mark L. Smith and will serve as a direct sequel to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond.
S.J. Clarkson had been attached to direct Star Trek 4 as recently as last year and was poised to become the first woman to helm a film in the sci-fi series but reportedly parted ways with the project after development stalled in mid-2018.
Hawley — perhaps best known for his work on FX series such as Fargo and Legion — recently made his directorial debut with the Natalie Portman-led drama Lucy in the Sky, which tanked at the domestic box office amid harsh reviews from critics.
Production on Star Trek 4 is expected to get underway in 2020.
