Following its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last week, Paramount Pictures has released the first trailer for Alexander Payne’s sci-fi comedy Downsizing. The film is perhaps one of the most divisive this awards season, earning mixed reactions from critics and audiences alike, and a 73% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
Downsizing follows a Paul (Matt Damon) and Audrey (Kristen Wiig), a couple who, in an attempt to abandon their stressed lives in Omaha, decide to shrink themselves and move to a new downsized community when Norwegian scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small. However, the couple’s choice triggers life-changing adventures, that could be for better or worse.
With a star-studded cast that also includes Christoph Waltz and Hong Chau, it’s a bit hard to not get at least a little excited for Payne’s latest effort, though, upon viewing this trailer and hearing some mixed reactions from my peers on the ground at TIFF, I’m staying cautiously optimistic about this one until it hits theaters on December 22, 2017.
