Earlier this month, Disney announced that production on Mary Poppins Returns, the sequel to the 1964 all-time classic which starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, had begun at Shepperton Studios in London with Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda in the lead roles. Now, just weeks later, the studio has treated us to our first look at Blunt in costume as the world’s most iconic nanny.
While there’s not a whole lot to take away from the newly released image, it’s exciting to see Blunt, whose most recent work includes the film adaptation of Paula Hawkins’ 2015 mystery thriller The Girl on the Train and Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar-nominated crime drama Sicario, looking as elegant and dazzling as ever. The beautiful pink hat, navy blue coat, sky blue gloves, dark red shoes, and the infamous magic bag, all standout and provide Blunt with the look she needs to make this role hers.
According to the official synopsis for Marry Poppins Returns, the new film is set in 1930s depression-era London and is inspired by the material written in PL Travers’ additional seven books where the enigmatic nanny re-enters the lives of the Banks family after Michael, who is now grown up, suffers a person loss and needs Poppins’ help to rediscover the joy and wonder missing in he and his family’s lives.
Rob Marshall is directing Marry Poppins Returns from a screenplay written by David Magee while Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are writing all new songs in addition to Shaiman’s composition of an original score. The film also stars Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Dick Van Dyke, and Angela Lansbury. Marshall, John DeLuca, and Marc Platt are producing.
Mary Poppins Returns will hit theaters on its Oscar-friendly release date of December 25, 2018. You can check out the newly released image of Blunt in the Mary Poppins costume in its entirety below.

Paramount taps ‘Fargo’ creator Noah Hawley to write, direct next installment in ‘Star Trek’ series
Fresh off the release of his feature directorial debut Lucy in the Sky last month, Noah Hawley has been set to write and direct the upcoming next installment in the Star Trek franchise, according to Deadline.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, and the rest of the principal cast are all expected to return for Star Trek 4, which Hawley will also produce for his 26 Keys banner along with JJ Abrams and Bad Robot.
The film is not in any way related to the R-rated spinoff Abrams and Quentin Tarantino have been developing with writer Mark L. Smith and will serve as a direct sequel to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond.
S.J. Clarkson had been attached to direct Star Trek 4 as recently as last year and was poised to become the first woman to helm a film in the sci-fi series but reportedly parted ways with the project after development stalled in mid-2018.
Hawley — perhaps best known for his work on FX series such as Fargo and Legion — recently made his directorial debut with the Natalie Portman-led drama Lucy in the Sky, which tanked at the domestic box office amid harsh reviews from critics.
Production on Star Trek 4 is expected to get underway in 2020.
