Back in November, we reported that Sony Pictures had been eyeing Don’t Breathe director Fede Alvarez to helm the highly anticipated next chapter in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo franchise following the success of his acclaimed box office smash of a thriller starring Jane Levy and Stephen Lang. Fast forward to the present day, and it appears negotiations have finally been settled.
Per a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Alvarez is directing the adaptation of the fourth book from the beloved series titled The Girl in the Spider’s Web from a screenplay he co-wrote along with Steven Knight and Jay Basu. However, while many were expecting Rooney Mara to reprise her role as Lizbeth Salander, the upcoming sequel will feature an entirely new cast. Alvarez is reportedly meeting with potential actresses to take Mara’s role from the first film.
The Girl in the Spider’s Web follows Salander and journalist Mikael Blomkvist, played by James Bond star Daniel Craig in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, directed by David Fincher, as they team up to enter a ruthless underworld of spies, cyber criminals, and government operatives, who are willing to kill anyone in order to keep their deepest, darkest secrets unexposed. Based on the novel by David Lagercrantz, who took over the series after creator Stieg Larson’s death in 2004, the film will be produced by Amy Pascal, Elizabeth Cantillon, Ole Søndberg, and Søren Stærmose.
“I’m hugely excited and grateful for this opportunity,” Alvarez said. “Sony has become family to me and I can’t think of a more thrilling project to celebrate our relationship. Lisbeth Salander is the kind of character any director dreams of bringing to life. We’ve got a great script and now comes the most fun part — finding our Lisbeth.”
With production expected to begin in September, The Girl in the Spider’s Web is scheduled to be released on October 5, 2018.

Paramount taps ‘Fargo’ creator Noah Hawley to write, direct next installment in ‘Star Trek’ series
Fresh off the release of his feature directorial debut Lucy in the Sky last month, Noah Hawley has been set to write and direct the upcoming next installment in the Star Trek franchise, according to Deadline.
Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, and the rest of the principal cast are all expected to return for Star Trek 4, which Hawley will also produce for his 26 Keys banner along with JJ Abrams and Bad Robot.
The film is not in any way related to the R-rated spinoff Abrams and Quentin Tarantino have been developing with writer Mark L. Smith and will serve as a direct sequel to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond.
S.J. Clarkson had been attached to direct Star Trek 4 as recently as last year and was poised to become the first woman to helm a film in the sci-fi series but reportedly parted ways with the project after development stalled in mid-2018.
Hawley — perhaps best known for his work on FX series such as Fargo and Legion — recently made his directorial debut with the Natalie Portman-led drama Lucy in the Sky, which tanked at the domestic box office amid harsh reviews from critics.
Production on Star Trek 4 is expected to get underway in 2020.
