$10K Fine for Eye Contact in Massachusetts Hiking Trail Is this true?

-

Residents in Massachusetts are puzzled by strange signs found along hiking trails.

One advised walkers to be careful. “No Eye Contact”Threatened offenders with a $10,000 Fine. Another said “No Running With Sticks.”

These strange markers caused a frenzy of social media posts. Some even suggested that these warnings were good Northeast humor.

“That may be the most New England thing I’ve ever seen. Love it,”One Reddit user wrote this. Another user described growing up Massachusetts.  “I smoke a cigarette and my neighbor does too. We’re always out at the same time. Our house is right up to their yard. I’ve never even looked in her direction,”According to the poster.

It could also be a friendly remark about rivalry between neighboring Waltham and Belmont in Boston.

“No Running With Sticks. Do it in Waltham — they don’t care if you put your eye out. Per Belmont Bylaw … (forgot which #).”

Whatever the reason, the signs are apparently gone now and no one has stepped up to claim ownership.

“Those signs were not Belmont-sanctioned signs and they have been removed,”An employee of the town shared his story with The Boston Globe by email.
