The village of Londesborough, East Yorkshire, has been without internet or a phone line for two weeks and residents are angry it is taking so long for it to be restored by BT
Furious residents have blasted the way they have been “cut off from the world” for the past two weeks without telephone or internet connections by BT.
The entire village of Londesborough, in East Yorkshire has been cut off after a telegraph pole located at the end of the village was knocked over on November 22.
The falling telegraph pole is thought to have been caused by a crash, reported HullLive.
It has left all households in the village without a landline telephone or internet link and residents are still waiting over two weeks later for them to be reconnected.
Residents have claimed they have had nine separate promises from British Telecom (BT), and now they have been told the line is due to be re-connected on December 8.
An local councillor has called the situation an “absolute disgrace” and wants to know from BT why the village has been left for so long without a connection.
Wolds Weighton councillor and former deputy leader of East Riding Council, Mike Stathers, said: “To leave a village without such a vital connection is an absolute disgrace and I call on BT to give a full apology and explanation to every single resident of Londesborough.
“Our own officers at ERYC have spoken with BT but in spite of pressure from them and from the residents nine separate promises of repairs being carried out were made and nine times the promise was broken.
“They have not truly considered the impact such a disconnection has had on the life of the village. One person, who operates his business from home, stands to lose a six-figure sum in potential sales by not being able to attend a vital webinar.
“Others were worried that they had no way of contacting health services in case of an emergency, and schoolchildren could not complete their online tasks, putting them at a disadvantage. The mobile signal at Londesborough is notoriously poor at times.
“We haven’t had six feet of snow. We haven’t had gales of 90 mph and as far as I know we haven’t had a National Strike so why has this village been left disconnected for so long. BT needs to come up with some answers and I will be taking this up with officers at ERYC.”
Openreach, a division of BT has apologised to residents and said engineers are “working flat out” to restore the connection”.
A company spokesman reportedly said: “We are really sorry for the disruption here.
“Our engineers are working flat out in a number of communities at the moment, including repairing damage from the recent storms. They’re doing their best to work as quickly and safely as possible.
“We’ve put a new pole in place here following the road accident, and we’re trying to arrange for people to be reconnected as soon as possible. Due to the nature of the damage, we are unable to put a temporary service in place, but we hope to have an update very shortly.”
