Starsky and Hutch have given us many iconic police cars – but which TV show is your favourite?
Top Gear’s stars are preparing to take viewers on a nostalgic trip down memory lane next Sunday (June 12, 2022), and the series finally has the answer.
A survey of over 1000 British adults was conducted by the long-running car program. The burgundy Jaguar Mark 2 driven and owned by Inspector Morse was voted the favorite vehicle in the country.
Over 53% of participants voted for the classic British-made model as the best cop car. Chris Harris, the presenter, shared his affection for the vehicle.
He said: “The Mark 2 originally had a reputation for grace and sophistication but by the 1980’s when Morse was on the TV, it had a different image, it was a bit more bank robber than stately home.
“But it all fitted with Morse’s character, the curmudgeon and intellect who loved real ale and crosswords and disliked pleasantries.”
Inspector Morses’ motorcar was closely followed, however, by another classic that just missed the top spot.
Gene Hunt’s famous Audi Quattro, a BBC time-traveling crime drama Ashes to Ashes, was close behind. Life On Mars’ detective’s Ford Cortina was number nine in the top 10.
The Ferrari 308 GTS, driven by Thomas Magnum of American crime series Magnum PI was one of the top three. Other vehicles on the list were driven by iconic TV crime fighting teams.
Fourth place was taken by the Ford Capri driven in The Professionals by William Bodie, Ray Doyle and Ray Doyle. Starsky and Hutch’s Ford Gran Torino came in fifth.
It wasn’t all. The poll also ranked the top ten cop cars, with Sonny Crockett’s Ferrari Testarossa, Miami Vice, taking sixth place, Vera Stanhope’s Land Rover Defender coming in seventh, Inspector Jack Regan’s Ford Consul GT, The Sweeney, reaching eighth.
Completing the top ten were the Mercedes SL and Ford Escort XR3i cabriolets driven Harriet and Jim In Dempsey and Makepeace.
Top Gear viewers can relive their memories with the classic cop cars on this episode. Freddie Flintoff is on a mission to make the Sinclair C5 more interesting, along with Chris Harris and Paddy McGuiness.
Top Gear will air this Sunday at 8pm on BBC One or BBC iPlayer
