A former Premier League academy star currently playing in Portugal with the Sultan of Brunei for an uncle and the honor of captaining his country to his name, who exactly is billionaire boy Faiq Bolkiah?
When you think of the world’s richest footballers, the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi instantly spring to mind, but even they fall short of this 23-year-old’s staggering worth.
With an estimated £20billion to his name, Bolkiah has been labeled the world’s wealthiest footballer, despite being a relative unknown among most football fans.
And speaking of relatives, Bolkiah boasts regal family heritage with none other than the Sultan of Brunei as his uncle.
Born in Los Angeles, Bolkiah holds dual citizenship of the United States and Brunei but has opted to represent the latter internationally, netting once in six appearances while also being awarded his nation’s captain’s armband.
Bolkiah spent much of his youth career bouncing around a number of Premier League clubs, including Southampton, Chelsea, Reading and Arsenal, before securing a first professional contract at Leicester City in Match 2016.
Currently on the books of Portuguese club Maritimo, the midfielder is yet to make a first-team appearance having joined on a free transfer in September 2020.
Despite his father Prince Jefri Bolkiah being widely regarded as the notorious playboy of the Brunei royal family, Faiq credits his supportive parents for allowing him to pursue his passion.
“I’ve played football since as early as I can remember, and from a young age, I’ve always enjoyed going out on the field and having the ball at my feet,” revealed Bolkiah to FourFourTwo back in 2017.
“My parents have always been supportive in helping me to achieve my dreams of being a footballer, and they trained me hard both psychologically and physically through my childhood years, so I have to say they are my role models.”
The Brunei skipper who, as reported by The Athletic, played alongside the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tammy Abraham during his brief stint at Chelsea, will no doubt be hoping to ignite his senior career in Portugal in a bid to earn a move back to English shores.
Despite receiving attention for his astonishing wealth and close regal links, Bolkiah will be hoping his football can do the talking, and his name can become a household one for very different reasons.
