Bradley Walsh admitted that he had been a victim of the sexism. “cheated”ITV bosses help Chase to get his job as a presenter on The Chase
The host of The Chase, the 61-year old has hosted it and its spin-off shows, including celebrity specials and Beat The Chasers, for 13 years since it premiered in 2009.
On the hit ITV series, four members of the public join forces to answer general knowledge questions in order to win cash prizes.
The competitors compete against Mark, the chasers ‘The Beast’Labbett, Shaun ‘The Dark Destroyer’ Wallace, Anne ‘The Governess’ Hegerty, Paul ‘The Sinnerman’ Sinha, Jenny ‘The Vixen’Ryan or Darragh ‘The Menace’ Ennis.
Bradley was told during pilot production that if one of the chasers could beat him, ITV would proceed with the series.
The show’s future was at stake when Roman Kemp confessed to the star.
Bradley said: “I’ve gotta fess up as well.
“When we first did the job, the only two choices that were first there were actually The Beast and The Dark Destroyer, right? We were running an office check and this was to get the job done.
“And I said ‘This is ludicrous, these questions are so easy’ and they said ‘Do you think you could beat the Chaser?’
“I said ‘If I beat the Chaser, we’ll make a series, let’s do that’ and they went ‘Yeah, alright, if you can beat the Chaser.’ Because they thought that the general public won’t be able to beat these gurus, right?
“And I went ‘Oh, I’ll definitely beat them, if I can beat them, we’ll make the series, alright?’”
The 61-year-old went on to explain how he cheated.
Bradley continued: “And this is absolutely true – what they didn’t realise was the sheets, with the questions and the answers on, were lying face down on my end of the desk.
“I could see the print through and I could read the answers backwards and I read them.
“So every time they come in on the head to head as if they were at the table, I’d smash both of them.
“And as I walked away, I took the piece of paper and put it on the other table so no one saw it. So I’d actually cheated.”
Bradley’s bold move has made the show one of ITV’s most popular shows and has been aired in the UK for over 1,860 episodes.
The Chase was replicated in 19 countries, including Australia and the US.
Five spin-offs of the show air on weeknights at 5pm on ITV.
