Dave Chappelle was just about to finish a joke about comedians being targets when someone ran up on him and attacked him.
The shocking footage, obtained by TMZ shows that the assailant appeared out of nowhere and knocked the comedian, 48, down while he was performing at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
Chappelle was able move to his feet and security rushed to capture the attacker. The audience was confused as to what was happening.
Jamie Foxx, Chris Rock and others were in attendance to show their support.
“Was that Will Smith?”Rock makes a joke on stage about the Oscars incident.
Chappelle also had a stunned Foxx join him on stage, and he said, “I thought that was part of the show.”
“This man is an absolute genius. We got to make sure we protect him at all times,”Foxx went on.
Chappelle was upset but not hurt after the show.
Foxx spoke to photographers and said: “I don’t even want to talk about it.”
Brianna Sacks, a Buzzfeed reporter, was present at the event. “It happened out of nowhere. It was extremely fast. [Security and other people] were beating [the suspect] for a long time,”She said.
The suspect has been identified by police as 23-year-old Isaiah Lee, a rapper who’s reportedly homeless. After being loaded onto an ambulance, he got arrested. His face was bruised and swelling, and his arm and handcuffed arm looked twisted.
Lee released the song “2020” in 2020. “Dave Chappelle.”
Cops claim that the assailant had a replica gun and a knife. Chappelle was performing with other comedians at the Hollywood Bowl for a Netflix special. Now the question is: How did this massive security breach happen?
“The reality is, Dave Chappelle is lucky to be alive. Especially the fact that the guy had a knife. From the moment of recognition when he hit the stage, security should have stopped that guy immediately,”Kent Moyer, celebrity security expert, said.
The stage crasher was charged with felony assault using a lethal instrument. He’s currently being held on $30,000 bail.
