Cops: Dad Arrests Baby in Hot Car, but Doesn’t Tell Cops That His Infant Was Alone in a Parked Vehicle: Police

Police said that a Georgia man was charged with murder in the death of his 8-month old daughter in a hot car. He was also taken to jail for another unrelated case. The 20-year-old father never told the arresting officers that his baby was alone in a parked car, authorities said Wednesday.

Davied Japez McCorry faces a second-degree murder count in the death of Nova Grace Whatley-Trejo. The father had parked his car at Snellville City Hall Tuesday and went to the Snellville Police Department to pick up a handgun that police had previously confiscated, officials said.

Det. Jeff Manley stated at Wednesday’s press conference that officers don’t release firearms without performing background checks on their owners. Manley stated that Whatley had outstanding probation violations warrants.

Officers arrested him and took him to jail, police said. Manley stated that Whatley did not speak a word about his child.

Whatley’s movements were captured by body cameras “from the moment he walked into the Snellville Police Department to the moment he was transported and released to deputies for processing at the Gwinnett County Detention Center,”The detective stated.

“He made no statements as to the fact that his daughter was left in the car two buildings away from the Snellville Police Department,”Manley stated.

Police said that Nova was found in Whatley’s car several hours later. Authorities stated that Nova was dead when the grandmother drove to pick up the baby.

“I’m absolutely astounded that somebody would leave an 8-month-old in a car, park away from our building and walk up here, knowing that child was in the car and leave them there,”Manley stated.

Authorities said that Whatley had been released Tuesday night under bail for the probation violation case. Police said that he was remanded and charged him with murder Wednesday after officers discovered the child’s death.

Online records indicate that he is being held at Gwinnett County Jail on this charge without bail.
