Rangnick explains Ronaldo’s absence from Man Utd’s derby defeat

According to reports Cristiano Ronaldo was angry to learn that Ralf Rangnick had dropped him from Manchester United’s starting XI, which would have faced Manchester City.

The 37-year-old striker was absent from Sunday’s squad and was not present at Etihad when United were defeated 4-1 by local rivals.

Ronaldo missed only the second Premier League game since his move from Juventus last summer.

The five-time Ballon d’Or Winner decided to fly to Portugal. He left his teammates stunned when he failed to appear at The Lowry Hotel on The Eve of the derby.

Ronaldo’s absence was also felt badly by the rest, who believed they could have gained from his presence at the dressing room.

Rangnick’s troubles in the wake the humiliating defeat were compounded when the report said that Ronaldo would not report for training. It raises questions about his future with United.

After Monday’s squad being given the day off, Real Madrid legend Real Madrid will be returning to Carrington base.

Rangnick demands that his players recover from injuries near home, not fly abroad to seek comforts.

After the match, Ronaldo insisted that Ronaldo was still injured. Roy Keane, a club legend turned-pundit, questioned if there was more to this issue than meets the eyes.

“I have to believe our medical department,”Rangnick stated. “Our doctor came to me on Friday morning to say Cristiano couldn’t train because of some problems with his hip flexor and the same on Saturday.”

United was dismantled in Ronaldo’s absence with Riyad Mahrez and Kevin De Bruyne scoring twice each for the hosts.

Rangnick’s only positive was Jadon Sancho’s first-half strike that briefly brought the Red Devils level.

It remains to see if Ronaldo – United’s top scorer in this season’s 30 games with 15 goals – will make a comeback to contention before Saturday’s match with Tottenham.
