Gareth Southgate has named England’s squad ahead of the qualifiers for the World Cup against San Marino and Albania this month – but Jadon Sancho is not allowed to play.
The Three Lions are set to face Albania at Wembley next Thursday, then travel to San Marino on Monday.
Marcus Rashford has returned to the squad, and Jude Bellingham is recalled after he missed the October internationals.
Sancho, who was unable to play due to his poor start at Manchester United, is out. Mason Greenwood is also absent.
Sancho has yet to score a goal, assist or assist since joining United in Borussia Dortmund. He has also not started any of the last four matches in all competitions.
AC Milan’s defender Fikayo Tomori has been also dropped. Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has also been dropped despite scoring a goal against West Ham United on Sunday.
However, the squad is being recalled for the final two qualifying matches next week.
Bellingham, Rashford and Liverpool fullback Trent Alexander Alexander-Arnold are all back in the squad.
Emile Smith-Rowe is not yet in the squad despite his outstanding performances for Arsenal this season.
United teenager Greenwood also missed out, meaning that he will continue to wear one England cap until March.
Southgate commented on the difficulties in selecting his squad. “It’s always difficult because we’ve got so much competition for places and we had quiet a few players missing last time which means you bring others in so you’ve got more decisions to make.
“There are some talented young players that aren’t quite making the squad. We’ve also kept a reasonable level of consistency with the group that performed well in the summer.
“There are players who are pushing the group really strongly.”
Southgate’s team can qualify for Qatar 2022 World Cup if they win their match against Poland and Albania, but lose to Andorra.
Four points from the two final matches can be used to guarantee your spot in the tournament. The tournament will take place November or December next year.
