Newcastle United’s £300million Saudi-led takeover has finally been completed after months of uncertainty. The Premier League approved the takeover after receiving “legally binding assurances” that the Saudi state would not control the club.
The Public Investment Fund (PIF) – which is seen as separate from the state – will provide 80% of the funds. The takeover means Mike Ashley’s 14-year reign as the Newcastle owner is over. The news has led fans to take to Twitter to make the same Joe Willock joke about his move to Newcastle.
The attacker left the Emirates for St James’ Park in the summer transfer window in a £25million deal after impressing on loan at the end of the last campaign. The move appeared to be somewhat of a downgrade for the promising talent, considering Newcastle is currently in a relegation battle.
But following the takeover, fans have flooded Twitter with the same joke about Willock. One user said: “Joe Willock upgraded by moving from Arsenal to Newcastle”. Another tweeted: “Willock joining Newcastle from Arsenal might not be a downgrade after all”. A third fan added: “Willock upgraded”.
The 22-year-old struggled for game time under Mikel Arteta and was subsequently loaned out to Newcastle last February until the end of the previous campaign. The former England Under-21 international made 14 Premier League appearances for Steve Bruce’s side and scored eight goals.
Willock’s impressive performances were enough to convince Newcastle to sign him on a permanent deal this summer. Many saw Willock’s recent move as a step back in some ways for his career development, but it may now not be the case after all.
The takeover news will give Newcastle immense financial backing and will no doubt propel them into the higher end of the Premier League table in years to come.
