Authorities in Georgia said that an Amber Alert was ended in Georgia when a 1-year old baby was killed by her father. He also killed her mother, and then turned the gun against himself.
Jaquari Bennett had been kidnapped by her dad, Darian Javaris Bennett, on Saturday night after he shot to death her mother and critically injured her grandmother at the family’s home in Covington, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
Keashawn Washington (38), died from her injuries. Peggy Burns, grandma, was shot in her head. However, she managed to tell authorities that Bennett had attacked her daughter and taken Jaquari.
Burns was rushed to the nearest hospital where she remains in critical condition.
Amber Alerts were issued throughout the state for the child.
The 38-year-old father dialed 911 and admitted to the shootings. He also said that he wanted to kill his son and himself, according to the sheriff’s offices. Police used GPS to locate Bennett’s car and park it in a church lot on Sunday morning.
According to police, the vehicle was abandoned. Officers arrived at the scene hearing gunshots behind the house of worship. The bodies of the mother and father were found in a nearby wooded gazebo, according to police.
“I had a gut feeling last night that this was the way this was going to end,” said Newton County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Jack Redlinger. “It’s a shot in the gut. We’ve been working all night long trying to locate him.
“We were hoping it would end differently. You know, all of us have children and we’re still reeling this morning from what happened,”He told the story WGCL-TV.
Police said that two other children aged 11 and 12 were present at the house during the shootings. They called 911 to report it. According to authorities, the uncle now has custody of those children.
