Harry and Meghan’s departure ‘jeopardises Charles’s downsizing plans’, expert claims

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s departure from royal duties has “jeopardised” Prince Charles’ alleged plans to slim down the monarchy, a royal historian has claimed.

Charles will ascend to the throne after the current monarch Queen Elizabeth II dies, and it has long been rumoured that the Prince of Wales plans to trim the royal institution down to consisting of only key figures.

Previously, royal commentators have speculated that these cuts will be made to save costs, and to improve the public image of ‘The Firm’.

However, after the Queen recently spent time in hospital following a health scare, plans are reportedly accelerating for who might take on her duties should she be unable to complete them.

And, speaking on the Mail’s Palace Confidential podcast, host Jo Elvin asked royal expert Ed Owens whether the Queen’s hospital visit might impact on Charles’s plans to slim down the monarchy.

“He would rather it had revolved around that core set of royals; originally his two trusty lieutenants William and Harry,” Ed suggested.

“Unfortunately, since Harry and Meghan’s departure, it has kind of thrown that plan into jeopardy.

“There will be a re-thinking. We’ve seen this with the Wessexes, for example, they’ve been drafted in to undertake new royal duties.”

After the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left the royal family in March last year, it was reported that their names had subsequently fallen below those of Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex on the Royal Family website.

And, after appearing on a BBC documentary in tribute to the life of Prince Philip, one royal expert predicted that Edward’s daughter Louise Windsor may have an “important role”You can play for the Royals in the Future.

Also speaking on the podcast, the Mail’s diarist Richard Eden agreed that there are “plenty of others who can step into roles”Without having to rely on Harry or Meghan.

“Obviously we’ve got the Cambridges, but we’ve also got the Duchess of Cornwall [who] could, but then Princess Anne will always do her duty. She carries out lots of duties for the Queen already,” Richard continued.

“So I really don’t think there’ll be any need for that desperate call to California.”
