Hermione Granger is an inspiring icon of feministism for all ages


“I’m hoping to do some good in the world!”

Hermione Granger didn’t know how much impact those words would have on her. Harry Potter and the Deathly HallowsThe last installment of the magical series is titled “The Final Instalment”.

Last Halloween, my nephew was 8 years old and I attended his outdoor costume parade at elementary school. He was dressed as a Fortnite neon skeleton (apparently it’s still A Thing, my fellow olds!). His best friend was also there, although it wasn’t an intention to match. As we waited to the precession begin, I was expecting to be able to see costumes I wouldn’t understand.

Then, a tiny girl dressed in a Hogwarts costume walked past me, proudly carrying her wand. Another young grade schooler, wearing the same costume and a Gryffindor scarf, passed me. I felt warm like I’d just drunk a cup of Butterbeer. My heart grew three times larger that day, seeing nine other girls dress up as Hermione Granger by the end of the event.
