“I was pretty close to dying”


The world is almost lost Jeff BridgesLast year. The Big Lebowski star fought COVID while undergoing chemotherapy for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He’s opening up about his fight.

From bad to worse

Bridges wrote a blog post in October 2020 in which he revealed that he was suffering from lymphoma. He posted a photo of his now-bald head, and claimed he felt good months later. It was months before he posted another update. Hell or High WaterStar provided an update. The good news? His cancer was now in remission. The bad news? He was in hospital for more than a month while he and his wife battled COVID.

“The reason I’m there so long is because my immune system is shot from the chemo. My dance with COVID makes my cancer look like a piece of cake,”Bridges wrote that day. Bridges was able walk his daughter down aisle when he was discharged from the hospital after a long stay.

Jeff Bridges: It Was ‘Close To Dying’

In Interview with PeopleBridges is open about his double illness. He explained that he “had a 12-by-9-inch tumor in my body…like a child in my body. It didn’t hurt or anything.”He received chemotherapy right away and the combination worked. “It worked fast,”Bridges said. “That thing just imploded.”

Although his cancer was quickly cured, both Bridges and his wife were still exposed to COVID from all the visits to the medical facility.  Both ended up in the ICU, and Bridges couldn’t leave the hospital for five months. “I had no defenses,”He said. “That’s what chemo does—it strips you of all your immune system. I had nothing to fight it.”

The COVID “made my cancer look like nothing,”Bridges said. He was in extreme pain and needed oxygen to get him to sleep. “I was pretty close to dying…I was in surrender mode. I was ready to go. I was dancing with my mortality.”Plasma therapy worked for everyone. Bridges soon completed physical therapy and he’s made a full recovery.

He’s Looking Forward

Bridges sees it all now that his encounter with death is behind him. “a bizarre dream.”He also gained a new lease of life through the ordeal. “my ability to receive all the love and give it was just heightened. Everything was turned up in the most beautiful way.”

Bridges is now back at work. He’s doing press for the FX series The Old ManBridges stars in the movie and is also an executive producer. He appears alongside Alia Shawkat, John Lithgow, and Alia Shawkat. The Old ManIt debuts June 16.
