Jerrod Carmichael comes out as gay during an HBO Special ahead of the ‘SNL Debut’


Jerrod Cartmichael bravely came forward during filming of his HBO comedy special. Rothaniel. The special, which premiered Friday, April 1, features several stories from his journey to accept his sexuality and tell his loved ones. The comedian admitted that he has received mixed reactions from those close to him. Carmichael breaks for a moment to tell a story about how he discovered his father was unfaithful to the mother of his child. “After that was out in the open, I was left alone feeling like a liar, because I had a secret,”He stated. “One that I kept from my father, my mother, my family, my friends, and you. Professionally, personally. And the secret is that I’m gay.”

Carmichael was greeted by a round of applause from the audience. “I’m accepting the love, I really appreciate the love. My ego wants to rebel against it,”He explained that he has had difficulties in the past. “I rebelled against it my whole life. I thought I’d never, ever come out. At many points I thought I’d rather die than confront the truth of that, to actually say it to people. Because I know it changes some people’s perceptions of me. I can’t control that,”He stated.

The 34-year-old was raised in North Carolina by a religious family. In his 2019 HBO special Home VideoHe spoke about his past interactions with men. “I’ve hooked up with dudes before,”He stated.

In Rothantiel,He admits that his relationship with his mother is not the best. He hopes for a better future. “As much as she believes in God, I believe in personal growth and feeling free,”He said. “And I do feel freer.”

Carmichael will be hosting SNLOn April 2.  On NBC, he had a sitcom that was semi-autobiographical. The Carmichael ShowThe three-season run of the television series was called.
