Friends Fans are mourning James Michael Tyler’s passing on Sunday. Tyler was known for playing Gunther the manager of Central Perk, where the gang would gather in nearly every episode. After a long fight with stage 4 prostate carcinoma, Tyler died. He was 59.
Toni Benson, Tyler’s longtime friend and manager, said that Tyler passed away peacefully at his Los Angeles home. Tyler, who was born in Mississippi, was diagnosed as having stage 4 prostate cancer. However, Tyler did not reveal the diagnosis until June 2018, during which he was undergoing treatment. Tyler stated that doctors initially were optimistic after Tyler was diagnosed. But then, the cancer spread to other parts his body, rendering his lower body paralyzed. “There are other options available to men if they catch it before me,” Tyler told Today. “Next time you go in for just a basic exam or your yearly checkup, please ask your doctor for a PSA test. It’s easily detectable… If it spreads beyond the prostate to the bones, which is most prevalent in my form, it can be a lot more difficult to deal with.”
