After scoring on Tuesday night, a Benfica fan recklessly hurled his stick at Luis Diaz.
After rounding Odysseas Vachodimos’ goalkeeper, the Porto forward celebrated with the home fans. This was during the Reds’ 3-1 win in the Champions League. While he was celebrating with his Liverpool team-mates, a Benfica fan waved a stick at him before throwing it towards the huddle.
Prior to joining Liverpool, Diaz spent two-and a-half years with Porto’s rivals Benfica. Diaz scored once in seven appearances, and didn’t lose any.
Liverpool supporters quickly responded to the incident through social media. One person tweeted: “A Benfica fan threw some sort of large stick at Diaz when he was celebrating I’m in tears.”A second: “No need for this reaction by Benfica fan after Diaz scored.”A third supporter was also added: “Throwing a stick at Diaz. This Benfica fan needs banning for life.”
Diaz was then thrown a stick at his face and he kissed the badge of Benfica fans, much to the delight of Reds supporters.
Liverpool will win the Champions League this year. We’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
One responded by writing: “Luis Diaz kissing the badge in front of some fuming Benfica fans has just made my night.”
Jurgen Klopp’s European away team put in a strong performance, and Diaz’s goal caps it. They will return to Anfield with a 3-1 advantage for next Wednesday’s second leg. The tie’s winner will play either Villarreal, Bayern Munich or both in the fourth round. The first leg is scheduled for the final week.
Diaz was also involved in Liverpool’s second goal. After Ibrahima Konate’s first Reds goal, he unselfishly steered the ball across goal to Sadio Mane.
The Portuguese side scored a goal through Darwin Nunez in the second period, before Diaz restored Liverpool’s two-goal advantage in the 87th minute.
