Louis van Gaal Worried Over Georginio Wijnaldum’s Lack Of Minutes With PSG

Former Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has struggled for game time since making the switch to PSG with Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal concerned over his lack of minutes.

The 30-year-old opted to leave Anfield in the summer after running down his contract and refusing to pen a new deal.

Having won the Premier League and the Champions League during his five-year stay, Wijnaldum left on a free transfer to link up with Mauricio Pochettino and his star-studded squad.

Following his arrival, the Ligue 1 side swooped to sign a host of free agents with Sergio Ramos, Gianluigi Donnarumma, and six-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi all making a move to Paris.

Initially, Wijnaldum seemed a firm favorite. He started all four of PSG’s opening league matches before dropping to the bench for the 4-0 thrashing of Clermont Foot.

Since then, the former Liverpool man has been used sparingly. Wijnaldum has seen just 35 minutes of action in the past three matches.

International manager Louis van Gaal is not happy about the situation and spoke to the midfielder when the pair linked up this week:

“Of course I’m worried,” said the Netherlands manager, as reported by RMC Sport.

“And I’ve already spoken about it with him the moment he joined us.”

“The major reason of him being relegated is Messi. He arrived before Messi, and I think Pochettino had other plans for him.

“He’s a player that’s easier to put on the bench than others because he isn’t going to slam his fist on the table to win his spot.

“He’s a nice guy. In his way of playing and personality, he doesn’t correspond to this Paris Saint-Germain.”
