Mauricio Pochettino discusses Manchester United job

Manchester United’s top brass have been criticised for years but don’t seem like they are learning from their mistakes.

Their management of Old Trafford’s managerial environment is already being challenged.

It seems that the thought process and direction are random, shifting from one day to another.

There’s no sense that ‘this is the thing we want’ – we will get it. United are resource-wise able to pursue the majority of world football’s coaches.

It seems that there is a standard for what they want: playing style, youth promotion, appropriate conduct. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer checked all the boxes, but the results weren’t there, and he was eventually fired.

We are already in danger of experiencing deja vu.

Rewind almost three years back and United was on the hunt for a manager, with Mauricio pochettino as the favourite.

We’re now in the exact same situation, except they have appointed an interim leader and he is a former player.

There was no doubt that Solskjaer, the man United had chosen to appoint when they gave him the reins in December 2018, was not the man they wanted. But they were almost forced into a corner.

He was not an experienced leader, so he was initially seen as a stopgap. But things quickly changed.

He achieved some impressive results and was able to enjoy a memorable evening in Paris. The fans were very fond of him. A few months later, the Norwegian signed a long-term deal.

However, the relationship ended exactly as it began: with reservations about the manager’s credentials. United refused to give Solskjaer the job on December 2018, which was the main reason he was fired in November 2021.

Michael Carrick was given the job and there is already a sense that it could happen again after Tuesday night’s win over Villarreal.

United has a highly competent team of players. They can give their players renewed motivation, and you may see good results.

Do they think Carrick will be reconsidered? What message would that send if they evict him after a remarkable interim period?

Before you even consider the possibility of an interim, whether Ernesto Valverde, Lucien Favre, or both, which are names that have been thought.

If they are successful, wouldn’t they be worthy of another shot for a longer duration? Particularly if they bring home a trophy like the FA Cup.

We come back to Pochettino again, who is currently employed by PSG. He was employed by Tottenham in 2018, but that didn’t stop him from being asked questions.

It appears that it is much more difficult to get the Argentine from Paris than it is to get him out of Tottenham. Pochettino answered any questions about his future in France with a straight bat and said he was happy there.

This is due to Ed Woodward and his co.’s lack of decisiveness. They must make this decision, but they won’t be able to stall.

It almost seems as if they allow circumstances or results to make their decisions for them. This is an indication of lack of conviction in their decision making.

You think Carrick is the man, even if it seems unlikely, then appoint him.

If Valverde impresses you from the first minute, appoint him.

Or, if this seems to be the case then the idea of Pochettino in Old Trafford is still attractive – you should pursue him.

However, a combination of any three is unlikely to be beneficial.
