Man Utd fans want Harry Maguire dropped as defender compared to infamous 90s flop

-

Manchester United fans have called for Harry Maguire to be dropped and have compared him to a famous club flop following another poor display.

For the third time in three games, Ralf Rangnick’s side surrendered a 1-0 lead, as they drew 1-1 against Southampton at Old Trafford.

United’s captain is one of the main players who has come under fire from his own supporters.

Throughout this season, the £80million centre back has failed to find his best form, with some of the blame for United’s poor results being laid at his door.

Some fans have compared Maguire to another infamous Old Trafford flop.

During the 1995/96 season, the club welcomed French defender William Prunier on a trial basis, with things not quite going to plan.

He had come through the same Auxerre team as Eric Cantona but certainly failed to replicate the success of his fellow countryman.

Prunier only featured twice under Sir Alex Ferguson, with his second appearance spelling the end, as United suffered a 4-1 defeat to Tottenham.

The Frenchman was used a scapegoat for the heavy loss and he opted to search for regular football elsewhere.

Following the Southampton game fans started to reassess their opinion of Maguire.

One wrote: “William Prunier was a better a better defender than Maguire.”

Another added: “William Prunier was unbeaten at Old Trafford.”

A third also expressed their anger, stating: “Even William Prunier didn’t p*** me off as much as this.”

The England international joined United in 2019, after permanent spells with Sheffield United, Hull City and Leicester.

It wasn’t long into his time at the club that he was handed the captain’s armband by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

In 92 Premier League appearances for the club, he has helped the team keep 31 clean sheets, but with only five this season.
