Manchester United was at its lowest point of the season on Saturday.

In their penultimate game of the Premier League campaign, they sunk to an embarrassing 4-0 loss at Brighton & Hove Albion, bringing an end to any tiny hopes they had of finishing in the Premier League’s top four.

Ralf Rangnick, manager, said it was a day to remember. Especially after the travelling fans turned against their own players in half two. Erik ten Hag, boss-inwaiting, would have been scared by what he witnessed.

Mirror Sport has all the fallout from the spectacular result on the south coast. United’s terrible 2021-22 season is a little closer.

Ronaldo reaction captured

United were 1-0 down at Brighton half-time on Saturday. While they did not play well, there was no sign of the dramatic collapse that would follow in the second.

Three goals were scored by Brighton in just 11 minutes. As David De Gea’s goal rained down, the camera was switched to Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese player smiled, clearly in pain, and tried to laugh it off.

Ronaldo has been a shining light for the Red Devils this season. He’s consistently found the net. It remains to be seen how big a role Ronaldo will play in Ten Hag’s long-term plans at 37.

Fernandes is fronting up

Bruno Fernandes was the one who stepped up after the game, despite the fact that the team had received a lot of criticism from United supporters.

The Portugal international has had a difficult season at United. He is not at the same level of excellence as he was in his first two terms at Old Trafford. Fernandes provided a candid assessment on both the individual and collective performance.

“The result is what it is,”He said. “It is not good enough. They outplayed us. They always had a solution. Pressed us better and they deserved the result.”

“I include myself in that,”He said that supporters chanting against the team was not appropriate for the United shirt. “What we did today, what I did today, was not enough to be in a Man Utd shirt and I accept it.”

Souness blasts United players

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness, a former Liverpool player, said that only two United footballers can be content with their performances during the Premier League season.

Scot offered a harsh assessment of Red Devils’ performance in the aftermath of their loss to Brighton, and took aim at players who let Rangnick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer down.

Souness claimed that only Ronaldo, De Gea and Souness can be content with their efforts.

“You’ll like to think the players are playing for their futures at that club because there must be question marks over so many of them,”Sky Sports interviewed him. “So many have underperformed, we know they’re better. But it’s okay us saying that, but they have to go out and do it.

“Ronaldo was close enough to a man and Ronaldo contributed goals and the goalkeeper [De Gea], maybe. You’re not able to find any Man United players, other than that.
