After Marilia Mendonca’s tragic death in a plane accident at 26 years old, Neymar paid tribute to her with a touching celebration.
Paris Saint Germain forward, who scored twice in the win over Bordeaux 3-2 to increase their lead at the top Ligue 1, revealed a touching tribute to Mendonca.
The singer was on her way from her home in Brazil to perform at a concert. She was one of five people who were killed in the crash in south-eastern Brazil.
Tragically, her uncle died as well as the music producer.
After scoring the first goal in a feisty first half, Neymar revealed that he had written a message underneath his PSG shirt. It read: “I will be your eternal fan, queen of suffering, rest in peace MM (Marilia Mendonca).”
Mendonca was a star in Brazil as well as the rest of South America. She had more than 40 million Instagram followers.
After Mendonca’s death, Neymar had made it clear that he was sad. The PSG star mourned her loss earlier in the week and tweeted: “I refuse to believe, I refuse.”
He also added: “I swear I went to sleep asking God that everything was a dream and that today, I just woke up from a nightmare.”
Her staff issued a statement earlier in the week confirming her death. It read: “With immense regret, we confirm the death of singer Marilia Mendonça, her producer Henrique Ribeiro, her uncle and advisor Abicieli Silveira Dias Filho, the pilot and co-pilot of the plane, whose names we will preserve at this time.
