Nichelle Nichols Dead at 89: Star Trek Actors Pay Tribute

Koenig William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, are the only surviving members of the original Star Trek. Nichelle’s suicide has been a source of much controversy.

Nichelle was the first Black actor to play a significant role on television. She and William also broke a cultural barrier when they engaged in American TV’s first interracial kiss, on a 1968 episode of Star Trek.
