Priest in Italy Fined for Toling Church Bells Too Much


According to Italian authorities, a priest was fined after he reportedly overtook his church bells. RTE.

The Florence priest has kept the residents in front of Santa Maria a Coverciano church in arms for over four years. They claim he rings church bells as many as 200 times per day.

According to the townspeople, Fr. Leonardo Guerri rings the bells daily between 8 and 9 p.m. He interferes with sleep, work, and relaxation. According to Corriere Fiorentino newspaper, the people in the area claim that Guerri rings the bells more during holidays.

RTE reports that the priest was fined more than $2,000 by the local municipality after years and decades of feuding.

The priest will still be able to ring the bells, but contingent on it being only during the gathering of Mass and the last service of the day at 6 p.m., RTE said.

When contacted by AFP news agency, the priest declined to comment.

This is not the first instance of a priest being fined for ringing parish bells.

After 13 years of complaints, one priest from Florence was fined $60,000 for excessive bell-ringing. The Guardian.
