Queen Elizabeth’s Title before Her Coronation Hasn’t Been Used Since

-

It’s hard to remember a time before Queen Elizabeth held the title of queen—but before she took the throne, the late monarch had a different title that was taken out of circulation while she reigned. But some believe this could change very soon.

The Queen Was Previously The Duchess Of Edinburgh

Queen Elizabeth, before she was made queen, was the Duchess and Duke of Edinburgh. From 1947 to 1952, she held the title. Only four people have held the title: Princess Augusta from Saxe-Gotha; Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna; then-Princess Elizabeth; and Camilla Parker Bowles.

This title was largely outlawed for a few reasons. The title was no longer used by the queen once she was elevated to the throne. However, Prince Philip was still known as Duke of Edinburgh.

Philip’s death in 2021 meant that his title was passed on to his son King Charles III. Charles, who was at that time the Prince of Wales, did not use the title. Although Parker Bowles was technically the Duchess and Duke of Edinburgh at that time, he did not use this title.

Who Will be the Duke and Duchess Of Edinburgh Now?

Now that Charles has ascension to the throne of England, it is likely that King Charles will pass the title of Duke to Prince Edward. The Duchess would be his wife, Sophie, Countess from Wessex.

Edward and Sophie aren’t the only royals who might be receiving new titles. It’s expected that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s children, Archie and Lilibet, will take on the titles of Prince and Princess.

Archie and Lilibet might be receiving prince and princess titles

This is part of a tradition that began in 1917, during King George V’s reign. Tradition dictates that the children and grandchildren the monarch’s can claim the titles of prince and princess. Some believe they will be known as Princess Lilibet or Prince Archie soon, but not HRH.

This slight is due to Harry and Markle’s 2020 decision to step away from the royal family, stop their duties, and move to California. Both Markle and Harry have both been openly critical of the royals family. Markle has allegedly saidShe wants her children to be heirarchical, meaning that they would have extra security in the UK.

The queen’s death has definitely shaken up the monarchy, and many are wondering how things will proceed now that King Charles is settling into his role as ruler. Many members of the royal family may be shifting their titles or taking up new positions.
