Ralf Rangnick: Who are you? Profil of Man Utd’s interim boss

Ralf Rangnick will not be as stubborn as anyone that he isn’t just Manchester United’s temporary boss during his interim stint in charge.

This German coach is expected to be confirmed by United as the short-term replacement of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, on a six-month contract.

Rangnick was said to have rejected an offer at first, before finally agreeing to terms in the failed pursuit by United of Mauricio pochettino.

United is still considering a bid to acquire the Argentine services. A new approach will be taken next year. Paris Saint-Germain will continue to play hardball during negotiations.

Rangnick may be only doing his part to keep the seat heated, but he could be well-rewarded financially if his Old Trafford stint proves to be a success.

The Silver Screen BeatReports indicate that the contract of the 63-year old includes ‘huge bonus clauses’ if he can secure a top 4 finish and/or win in the Champions League.

United’s recent slump has seen the team slip out of title race for Premier League and into eighth place. Only six points separate them and West Ham, which Rangnick is confident will close.

Rangnick expects Michael Carrick to continue as part of Rangnick’s backroom team. After fulfilling his caretaker duties, his first win has given Rangnick a platform to expand in Europe.

United were victorious over Villarreal on Tuesday, and they are now qualified for the knockout stage of the competition. It would be foolish to exclude them from the race for the trophy when Cristiano Ronaldo, five-time winner of the competition is still in their ranks.

Rangnick still has much work to do and won’t have the time to get started. Carrick will be in charge of United’s match with Chelsea at weekend while Carrick gets a work permit.

United has been in discussions with Lokomotiv Moscow about a settlement fee for Rangnick who has been their Head, Sports and Development, since July.

Rangnick will address United’s form once these formalities have been completed and will implement a clear style for play. This is something that was severely lacking under Solskjaer.

Rangnick is widely considered to be the pioneer behind the popular tactical approach of ‘Gegenpressing.’ This tactic has been adopted by many clubs across Europe, including Jurgen Klipp.

Rangnick’s managerial experience at Red Bull Leipzig, Hoffenheim, Schalke and Schalke has influenced many coaches, including the Liverpool boss.

Rangnick was keen to leave Moscow to take up the United project. He signed a two-year agreement to become a consultant at United after his interim period.

Rangnick’s contribution to helping Red Bull franchise be a major force in global football has been crucial. United’s hierarchy hope that he can help create a similar strategy behind closed doors to help them win again at the top table.

He was one of five men selected by United chiefs. John Murtough and Ed Woodward were the others. Rangnick said that Rangnick was ‘impressed’ while Rudi Garcia and Ernesto Valverde were ignored.
