The Today ShowJenna Bush Hager, Savannah Guthrie’s friend and colleague, celebrated her birthday this week in style. Guthrie was 50 years old Monday, Dec. 27, while Hager surprised Guthrie on Tuesday, Jan. 4. She organized a private concert at Madison Square Garden for a friend.
Hager mentioned that Guthrie is a difficult person to gift because she has been so far and seen many of the wonders of the world for herself. But she was able to use that knowledge to her advantage as she tried to find the right present. She explained: “If you know Savannah, you know how much her faith means to her. Her trip to the Holy Land [was] one of her most treasured experiences.”

Hager, with this in mind, hired Andrea Bocelli, an Italian tenor, and Virginia, his daughter, to perform their Guthrie at Madison Square Garden. They performed a passionate rendition of Leonard Cohen’s song. “Hallelujah.”Hager called it the gift “a surprise of a lifetime,”Guthrie was tearful, but he seemed to be in agreement.
“The fact that Andrea Bocelli adapted this very famous song that I know Savannah loves, to grapple with the power of faith, is something that I think is going to move Savannah in so, so many ways,”Hager said. “I think there’ll be tears. I think Savannah will cry.”
Hager led Guthrie into her seat wearing a blindfold. Guthrie was giddy as Hager took it off. Hager broke down, but she was more moved by the excitement of her friend than anything.
“I want Savannah to know that in 50 years, she has done so much. She has brought so many people happiness,”Hager said it in voice-over. After the song was over, Guthrie approached Virginia and thanked Bocelli, saying that it was “the honor of my life!”
