Scott Edwards, a longtime friend, and Perry Charles made good on their promise to share any major lottery wins. Charles won the Fast Play jackpot Tuesday.
Officials from the lottery claim that the men have known one another for more than 35 years. They met at a local grocery shop, Edwards as an employee.
According to a NC Education Lottery news release, Charles won $361 527 in Fast Play.
“I’d just gotten off of work,”Charles made the statement in the release.
“I looked at the amount you could win and thought to myself, ‘Man, I want this!’”
Officials from the lottery claim that Charles purchased his $5 Double Win ticket at Mast Food Mart, Old U.S. 64 East, Lexington, North Carolina.
According to the release, Charles waited until he returned home to check if he won.
“I was lost for words,”Edwards said.
“I was kind of in shock too because to me that’s a lot of money to win. And I know that anything he says is just the truth. So, I knew when he told me that he wasn’t pulling my leg.
“We always talked about if we would hit something big, it didn’t matter if we went in together to get the ticket or if we got it separate, we were gonna share it with each other,” Edwards said.
“He’s what you call a true friend,” Edwards continued. “Kinda like family.”
The release says that the prize was collected by the two friends after withholding federal and state taxes. They plan to use the money to pay their bills.
