The Wife of a D.C. Cop who took his own life after Capitol Riots is a fitting legacy

Jeffrey Smith, the widow of a D.C. police officer, took his own life nineteen days after the U.S. Capitol Riots.

Erin Smith received an email from Washington, D.C. officials earlier this month stating that her husband’s suicide had been caused by injuries sustained fighting violent demonstrators, and that his death was in the line of duty.

She was able to receive her full pension and, she claims, left a lasting legacy for her husband.

Within seven months, four of the officers who responded on January 6 committed suicide.

Smith stated that she believes Jeff’s death was in the line-of-duty because the district initially hesitated to label it. “with a suicide comes a stigma and something that the police department doesn’t want to face or recognize.”

After Jeff died, she lost health insurance and much of the family income.

“It’s hurtful and it’s sad that they can’t even reach out to the widow of one of their own officers,” Erin said. The D.C. Police Department as well as the mayor’s office did not respond to Erin’s request for comment.

“I’m fighting for my husband but I’m also fighting for everyone else who has gone through this as well,” Erin said. “And it deserves the recognition.”
