After a series of cancelled and missed appearances due to illness, the Queen has been in the news this month.

Recently, she has canceled trips to Northern Ireland and COP26 in Glasgow.

Buckingham Palace stated that the Queen was expected to arrive at the Cenotaph just two hours before service began. “with great regret”.

In October, she announced that she would be taking time off from major royal responsibilities in order to rest. This has now been one of her longest periods away from the public eye since 1953, when her reign began.

This week she has cancelled her attendance to the Church of England’s General Synod at Westminster Abbey.

She seems to be doing light duties now, possibly from Windsor Castle. Her future engagements are not listed on the website of the royal family for the remainder of the year.

The biggest news of the week was when it was revealed that she was unable to attend Whitehall’s remembrance parade on Sunday because of a sprained ankle.

The monarch and prime minister are expected to attend each year. This is the first time that the sovereign has not attended in 22 years. It was only six times she missed it in the past: because of foreign visits or pregnancy.

She is not believed to have required hospital treatment for her sprained lower back. However, it understands that standing at the service and driving the car would have been difficult.

It remains to see how the Queen’s health progresses into 2022, when she plans on celebrating her Platinum Jubilee.

Many people wondered whether she might have shunned the public after Prince Philip’s death at age 99. But this did not appear to be the case when she resumed her normal schedule shortly afterwards.

In 2018, The Queen was admitted to hospital for planning cataract surgery. But, just a few weeks later, she went to St Paul’s and was told that the service was cancelled. “under the weather”.

The Palace said: “As a precaution, all official engagements for this week will regrettably be either postponed or cancelled.”
