John Lewis doesn’t usually cut corners when it comes producing and promoting its Christmas advert every year.
John Lewis isn’t one to cut corners when it comes Christmas advertising. This year, the budge would make Ebeneezer Scrooge shiver.
It’s an extraordinary experience. Skye, a space traveller, crashes to Earth to meet Nathan and to witness the magic of a Christmas for the first time.
Skye’s rocket crashes into the forest, and Nathan, a teenager, discovers the holiday season. Nathan also shows Nathan the experience of Christmas through Nathan’s eyes.
Skye can be seen enjoying Christmas traditions from eating mince pies to wearing Christmas jumpers.
In the advertisement, alien Skye can be seen setting fairy lights on Christmas trees and giving out gifts. She also watches festive movies with her friends and family.
John Lewis usually discloses the cost of Christmas advertisements, but has not yet revealed this year’s total.
We know how much they have spent and are in the millions.
It has been reported that the retailer has spent around £800,000 in coming up with the concept of this year’s advert, as well as filming it, the special effects and editing.
The cost is thought to include actors and staff involved in the advert but it is shy of the £1 million that was spent on their animated advert last year.
Added to this cost is the huge promotional budget that John Lewis gives to the advert, thought to be around £5 million, so that it can be seen during prime slots on TV.
The retailer had already attracted people to London and Newcastle with replicas of Skye’s spaceships in their city centres before the advertisement was published.
John Lewis will also add a Christmas Emporium in ten of its stores, where scenes from the advertisement will be recreated.
Customers will have the opportunity to create interactive GIFs that they can share on social media.
