Widow Accuses Husband of Died After GPS Takes Him Off Cliff, 9 Years Before.

What should have been a day filled with happiness ended in tragedy as a North Carolina man driving home from his daughter’s birthday party died after driving off a bridge that had been washed away nearly a decade earlier. His family and widow are trying to raise awareness about their terrible loss.

Phil Paxson had stayed behind to help his friends clean up after they hosted a party to celebrate his and his wife Alycia’s oldest daughter’s ninth birthday. Alycia left their two daughters with him.

“I remember saying goodbye, love you, see you in a bit,”Alycia spoke out about Inside Edition.

Paxson was driving to his new house in suburban Charlotte because it was stormy and he only had a few minutes to drive. His family said that he was still not familiar with the roads so he used GPS to navigate.

Paxson drove for about four minutes. His family believes his GPS pointed him down a path, where he likely would have expected to cross an unlikely bridge. But the bridge hasn’t existed since 2013 when it was washed away. It was called the “bridge to nowhere.”

Paxson drove off, plunging 20ft into the ravine. State troopers discovered his SUV partially submerged. Paxson was inside.

“Yes, 100% preventable, in my opinion,” Alycia said of her husband’s death. When she was asked how the bridge could have fallen through the cracks, she replied, “Unfathomable. I just can’t wrap head around how this could happen.”

The county and the state both claim it’s a private road within a private development, but they are not responsible.

“We’ve heard from neighbors that they have heard of babysitters or delivery drivers who almost suffered the same fate as Phil,”Inside Edition was informed by Bob Zimmerman, an attorney who represents Paxson and his family.

To prevent any further tragedy, a barricade was built today. Alycia is still haunted by the untimely death of her husband.

“He didn’t deserve to die this way,”She spoke.
