Oscars 2022 organizers asked Will Smith (53), to leave after his encounter with Chris Rock, but Smith refused.
The Academy started an investigation into the incident after Chris, 57 made a joke about Jada pinkett Smith’s hair.
The statement was as follows: “‘The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy.
“The unexpected happened.
“While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”
Chris, comedian, joked about Jada’s buzzcut at 50 and how she was quipping. “Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2.”
Will, who later won Best Actor in the evening, walked up to stage and slapped presenter before returning to his chair and screaming: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f****** mouth.”
Jada shaves her head because she suffers from alopecia.
Chris stated that he would not press charges against Will, but many people were curious as to why Will could remain in the audience following the incident.
Since then, the Academy has set the record straight.
Wednesday, March 30th, the Academy’s board met to initiate disciplinary proceedings against the actor in respect of violations of the group’s conduct standards.
Organisers claimed that he will have the chance to defend himself in written responses before the board meets on April 18.
According to the academy, Will could be subject to suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions.
They also issued another statement that read: “Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Oscars were a deeply shocking, traumatic event to witness in-person and on television.
“We apologize for what you saw on our stage, Mr. Rock. We also want to thank you for your strength in that moment.
“We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.”
Will Smith posted an apology on Instagram within 24 hours of the incident to Chris, the Academy and everyone else watching from around the globe for his behavior during the ceremony.
Will stated in the statement: “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive.
“My behavior at the Academy Awards last night was unacceptable. Jokes at my expense are part of the job. However, a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much and I responded emotionally.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be.”
Will Smith was awarded the Oscars’ prestigious Best Actor Award for his portrayal as Richard Williams in King Richard.
