Women Give Birth in Mid-Flight over International Waters


American Airlines flew to Dominican Republic and a passenger was onboard when a woman broke her water. She gave birth on the plane.

The newborn’s mother, Kendra Rhoden, was seven-months pregnant with only six weeks before her due date when she hopped on a flight to her vacation destination in the Caribbean in September, reported KKTV.

According to KKTV, Rhoden was taking an on-flight sleep when she woke up to hear her baby kick and her water breaking.

“Everything just happened so fast, it just happened so quick,” Rhoden Telled WFSB.

According to WFSB, the nurses on board the flight were quick to deliver Rhoden’s baby boy.

Rhoden’s sister ShareLater, a TikTok thanked her sister’s four nurses for helping her deliver her baby.

“We really appreciate you for all the hard work you did that day because we know how things really could have went left,” Rhoden’s sister said in the TikTok. 

As for the name of the baby boy, Rhoden only felt right naming him after the situation in which he arrived.

“Skylen is his real name.” Rhoden says. “Because he was conceived in the air.” reported WPSD.

For the location of birth on baby Skylen’s birth certificate, it says he was born “in the air”WPSD reports that he has been recognized as an American citizen.

According to WPSD the mother and newborn spent some time at a Dominican Republic hospital before flying home to Connecticut to undergo evaluations.
